Swimming in Guam is perfect for three reasons: warm tropical weather all year round, crystal clear waters with white sands, and an amazing backdrop of lush mountains, glimmering waterfalls and the wide Pacific Ocean.

The weather in Guam is as steady as it can get. Throughout the year it maintains a balmy 70 to 80°F. This small island-nation is perfectly positioned in the Pacific Ocean and near the equator so that the cool ocean breeze offsets the humidity and heat from the tropical sun. Although the country experiences a rainy season, the sun always manages to shine so that the island is never damped for too many days. There are occasional typhoons though, but the country and people are very well prepared. Rainy season is from July to November. It is good to avoid these months, but so far the country has been receiving guests in all the months of the year. The weather in Guam is better than in most leading island-resort destinations in the Asia-Pacific region: perfect for swimming or simply strolling by the beautiful beaches.

The second reason why people come here is Guam’s attractive beaches. Below are a few of them.

First stop is Cocos Island near the equally popular Tumon Bay. Cocos Island is uninhabited and is about a mile off Guam’s southern shore. Located within the Merrizo Barrier Reef, the beaches in Cocos Island are to die for. The water and sand here are what dreams are made of – blinding white-sand beaches, warm turquoise waters, seamless horizon, cool sea breeze and swaying palm trees, warm tropical sun, and post-card-perfect sunsets. What more is there to say? Besides swimming, visitors to Cocos Island may enjoy a number of water sports such as jet skiing, kayaking, parasailing, scuba diving, dolphin watching, windsurfing, shore snorkeling and boat snorkeling.

Another beach is the Governor Joseph F. Flores Beach Park, more commonly known by locals as Ypao Beach. This is no doubt the busiest beach in Guam because of its exciting night life. During the day, vacationing families enjoy swimming, snorkeling and engaging in other water activities. There is a specific area here that is perfect for snorkeling. Also, several community events, concerts, competitions or parties take place at the amphitheater or in the pavilions. In the evenings, the beach transforms into a venue for partying, drinking and adult entertainment. There’s just so much going on in here, especially during weekends.

Third is Taga’chang Beach Park. Just like Cocos Island, Taga’chang Beach Park has everything that one can dream of in a beach resort: white sands, clear-blue water, gentle surf, pine trees, limestone cliffs, coral reef and abundant marine life that make this beach ideal for swimming, snorkeling, fishing and diving. Admission is free, but visitors should bring their own lunch, since there are no restaurants in the park.

Finally, there are definitely many more beaches to enjoy, such as the Ipan Beach Park, Haputo Beach, Talofofo Beach and Coco Palm Garden Beach. Guam is a tropical island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean; it is impossible for anyone to visit Micronesia without swimming in Guam.

Guam is a small island in the middle of the vast Pacific Ocean. This means everywhere you look there is water. Who doesn’t enjoy water? For some reason, the beach always lets out your fun side. If you love adventure and have the money to spare, jet skiing and other water sports in Guam are definitely worth trying.

Guam will mesmerize you with its sparkling white beaches and inviting warm waters. After swimming, snorkeling and diving for hours, you might want to try something more challenging with the water. You definitely have to try jet skiing, if you haven’t tried it already.

Jet skiing is one of the most expensive yet sought after water sports in major tropical islands around the world. In Guam, there are a number of companies that rent out jet skis and offer a quick crash course in jet skiing. If you have not jet-skied before, you should take the course, not because it is a difficult thing to learn but simply because the course can help you maximize your enjoyment and make the most of your time and money. You will learn when to sit down on your jet ski and relax, and when to stand up and rev the motor. Once trained, you will see how safe jet-skiing really is. Nonetheless, you should be careful not just for yourself, but also for other people, especially those who are swimming in the water and could potentially get run over.

Cocos Island is very popular for its jet-ski rentals. Cocos Island is an uninhabited island off the southern coast of Guam. Service boats regularly take people in and out of Cocos Island, which only shows how popular this resort is. The place is also known for scuba diving, snorkeling, dolphin watching, sea-walking, parasailing, windsurfing and kayaking.

There is definitely a lot more water activities to try and enjoy other than jet skiing. Guam is also popular for deep sea fishing. Guam is not located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and near Marianas Trench for nothing. It offers the best open sea fishing in the world. In fact, the record blue marlin catch happened here. The Pacific Ocean is teeming with blue marlins, sailfish, yellow fins, ship-jacks, and more, and no other country is closer to these beautiful sea creatures than Guam. A popular charter boat you may consider is the Lucky Strike Guam Sport Fishing Charter.

Guam is also known for scuba diving. Divers and ocean enthusiasts visit the many dive sites and wreck sites off the Guam coastline. History will tell you that Guam and the Pacific was the setting for many fierce maritime wars. A number of Spanish galleons, Japanese war ships, and American vessels have sunk nearby. Cocos Island is once again a leading venue for a very satisfying dive. Guam waters are exceptionally clear. One needs only to snorkel on shallow waters and already get to enjoy watching colorful fishes swimming in and out equally colorful corals.

There is a lot more to enjoy in this Pacific Island. Believe it or not, jet skiing and other water sports in Guam are just the beginning of your fun vacation. Next comes the amazing people and their exciting culture and festivities.

In Guam, when tourists are not busy swimming in the beautiful beaches, diving in the world-class dive sites, or simply having fun with the friendly locals, they are hiking or climbing a mountain trail. Hiking in Guam is a popular activity because there are just so many interesting trails that pass through amazing forests, grasslands and limestone cliffs.

A few of the most trekked paths are Favian Cove, Fonte Dam, Priest Pools, and Mount Sasalaguan. Fadian Cove involves a hike along the picturesque Mangilao coastline along rugged limestone cliffs. The view at the north side of the coastline is simply spectacular. Make sure you have your camera with you. The trail leads to a series of four small coves or coastal inlets, the furthest south of which is Fadian Cove. After the hike, you deserve to cool off and relax in the cove’s calm waters. You can also snorkel if you’ve brought along your gear. Also, bring some food since there are no stores in the area. This hike is considered medium difficulty.

Next stop is Fonte Dam. The vast Fonte Dam made from red bricks provides a spectacular contrast against the lush wild jungle. This historic landmark was built in 1910 as the main water supply to the capital city of Hagatña. It is truly a hidden treasure and only adventurous hikers get the opportunity to see it. This hike also rates medium difficulty.

Third is Priest Pools at the southern end of Guam. This hike includes two scenic spots: the Priest Pools, also known as “Nature’s Own Swimming Pools”, and Toguam Bay. Priest Pools is actually made up of eight multi-depth pools with a series of cascading water from the Pigua River and into the Pacific Ocean. Since this hike is rated easy, you may bring along swim suits and snorkeling gear.

The fourth hike is to Mount Sasalaguan. This is a long and difficult climb. It is 4.2 miles long, climbing up to 960 feet and descending down to 960 feet, and would take roughly four hours to finish. However, you won’t really find it difficult since you will be treated to a dramatic view of Guam’s southern mountains and through the Cocos Lagoon. Bring plenty of water since there is usually too much exposure from the sun when making this hike. Perhaps this is why the mountain is named “Sasalaguan”, which is Chamoru for “hell”.

Other than these four popular trails, the hike to Guam’s waterfalls is also very exhilarating. Try taking the hike to Tarzan Falls. It is neither an easy hike nor as spectacular but the pool beneath Tarzan Falls makes the experience unforgettable. Another popular waterfall is Talofofo Falls. Near the area are other tourist attractions such as Yokoi’s Cave, Guam Historical Museum, Ghost House, and Observation Tower

Finally, the highest peak in Guam is Mount Lamlam located in Agat Village. If you love hiking, adventure, or mountain climbing, you cannot leave Guam without checking it out from the summit of Mount Lamlam where you can enjoy a 360-degree view of the entire island. This relatively easy climb is the king of all climbs. It is definitely the best way to experience hiking in Guam.

Besides scuba diving, snorkeling and the usual water activities, another sport that sits well in the laid-back atmosphere of Guam is golf. Golfing in Guam simply highlights the country’s soothing weather and lush green forests. Golf has always been considered a game that requires the most beautiful greens, surroundings, and weather. Guam has all of these.

Guam is unlike any other country in the world. As a US territory, the island is generally clean, well maintained and very orderly. It is home to world-class beaches and dive sites, interesting World War II mementos and sites, and a number of endangered species. Located above the equator, between the Pacific Ocean and Philippine Sea, Guam enjoys comfortable weather all year round. The Pacific breeze and tropical sun make a perfect combination, maintaining temperatures between 70°F and 80°F throughout the year. It is never very hot or humid.

Guam is an island of breath-taking sceneries surrounded by tropical jungles and spectacular limestone cliffs. The air is always filled with the sound of the sea and chirping birds. Now imagine playing golf in the middle of all these.

Guam takes golf seriously. It is a tiny country with a total land area of only 212 square miles, and yet there are seven world-class golf courses scattered all over the island. It is surely a golfer’s paradise. All the courses were designed by world renowned Japanese and American golfers.

The seven golf courses in Guam are the following. There are four 9-hole golf courses within Leo Palace Golf Resort. Two of the courses were designed by Arnold Palmer and one by Jack Nicklaus; the Talafofo golf course with 18 holes was designed by nine top golfers in the world, each of whom designed two holes. The nine senior golfers are Ben Hogan, Sam Sneed, Billy Casper, Doug Ford, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Gene Sarazen, Bob Toski, Orville Moody, and Gene Littler; and then there’s Mangilao Country Club golf course that was designed by Robin Nelson.

In the “Asia-Pacific Golf” magazine, George Fuller described Mangilao Country Club as one of the best golf courses in the Pacific, if not the world. Located on top of a cliff overlooking the wide Pacific Ocean, this is truly one of the most breathtaking spots in the world to play golf.

And by the way, Leo Palace Golf Resort is more than just about golf. It also has more than 100 condominium units, a swimming pool and a few tennis courts.

Other golf clubs and resorts in Guam are the Country Club of the Pacific, Alte Guam Golf Resort, Guam International Country Club, and Windward Hills Country Club. With greens fees and cart rental beginning at $80, everyone is welcome to try these Guam golf courses. Beginners and professionals, and even the mere curious, are invited to try and enjoy golfing. The courses are all easy to access since Guam is fairly small. No two golf courses are 20 minutes apart or away from the major hotels by car. Golfing in Guam truly has its own special character and appeal.

Guam may be a far-flung island in the middle of the Pacific but since it is a US territory, it is pretty much the United States dressed in an islander’s outfit. If you are visiting for the first time, you might just be surprised that the major food joints are all American. Eating and drinking in Guam is not much of a stretch.

The leading Guam restaurants are Lonestar Steakhouse on Marine Corps Drive in Tumon, Outback Steakhouse also in Tumon across the Westin Hotel, Hard Rock Café at the Plaza Arcade in Tumon, TGI Friday’s, one in Tumon and one in Hagatña near the Hagatña Marina, and Planet Hollywood. There are hundreds of American soldiers stationed in the country and they need to have their fill.

Guam is a mixture of cultures, a melting pot of the East and West. It was under European influence for three centuries when Spain ruled over it, is now a US territory, is located in the Pacific, and is very close to Asia so there are so many migrants from Korea, China, and the Philippines, as well as hordes of Japanese tourists. You can see this mixture in what people are eating around Guam.

Other than the leading American food places, there are Caliente Taquera serving Mexican food, House Chin Fe serving Chinese food, Thai Kitchen and Jamaican Grill. There are also tons of grills and barbecue spots along the major beaches.

However, if you really plan to experience Guam’s local culture and eat what Guamanians are eating, go to Chamorro Village in Hagatña on a Wednesday night and get a cultural does of the Wednesday Night Market. Be delighted to see a row of food stalls and kiosks selling all kinds of stuff, some of which you may not have heard of before in your entire life. Walk through the stalls and try the Chicken Chalakiles, Latija, and Lechon Kawali. If you would rather eat something you can pronounce, there are plenty of barbecues, freshly-picked fruits and ice cream along the way. But whatever you choose to try, make sure to pay quickly and run to the bleachers to catch the evening entertainment with live band performances and Taihitian dancers. Eating local-style at the Wednesday Night Market is quite a cultural experience that is hard to forget.

For those who wish to drink, there are a number of bars and liquor stores all over Guam. The best bars are Jeff’s Pirates Cove in Talofofo, House of Brutus in Tamuning, Fusion Tavern in Tumon, and Chamorro Island Bar BQ in Hagatña. However, the most talked about drinking and partying are those that happen at nights at Ypao Beach Park. This is a popular hang-out area for people wanting to party all night and get drunk. The beach is also referred to as Joseph Flores Beach Park.

Guamanians and the native Chamorro people love to party. Festivals, fiestas, carnivals, street-dancing and feasting all play an important role in the local culture. Eating and drinking in Guam is not just something fun to do, but something that cannot be avoided.

Diving in Guam is simply amazing, ’nuff said. Or maybe not quite enough if you really plan to go and experience it for yourself. Let’s get down to more details, in that case.

Many people around the world may not have heard about this tiny-island nation. Others may have heard about it but mostly for its historic and warfare exploits. It did play a very significant role in World War II when the United States reclaimed the Asia-Pacific from the clutches of the Japanese Empire. If Guam was not used as a military outpost by US troops between North America and Asia, the task would have been a lot more difficult. Japan was very close to the Asian countries it seized, and as the US moved closer to Asia in Guam, the battle leveled somehow. We all know now that the US and its allies won the war. But what has this got to do with diving in Guam?

Well, around this US island-territory are a number of sunken vessels and war implements, which make the dives very, very interesting, and often eerie and mysterious. A few of the wreck dive sites are Cocos Island, American Tanker, Tokai Maru, SMS Cormoran, and Kitsugawa Maru.

Scuba diving in Cocos Island is very popular because apparently there are Spanish silver swords, coins, and artifacts that are yet to be unearthed from the bottom of the ocean. These sunken treasures are believed to be worth millions of dollars today. The sunken ship is a Spanish galleon named Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragosa y Santiago. It was on its way to the Philippines from Mexico carrying the treasures when the long coral reef off Cocos Island damaged its bottom and eventually sank the ship. Many have attempted to look for the treasures, and these people have included scientists, archeologists and expert divers, but all without luck.

The American Tanker, on the other hand, is just a 300-feet barge. No treasures here: just the beautiful corals and fishes. The barge was believed to have been carrying war supplies from Honolulu, Hawaii. It sank in 1944 while being towed by USS Bannock and Arikara on its way to Guam. Underwater, it is now teeming with all sorts of marine life. The tanker pilothouse is at 40 feet deep.

The Tokai Maru is even larger than the American Tanker. It is 440 feet long and is now 120 feet deep underwater, but you can see it at a depth of 60-80 feet. It is an eerie dive and swim along her huge engine room, engines, catwalks, and panels, which remain intact to this day. While swimming along the Tokai Maru you could actually see SMS Cormoran, another sunken vessel nearby. It is 290 feet long and lies 120 feet underwater.

Finally, to the west of Tokai Maru is another large shipwreck, the Kitsugawa Maru, a Japanese freighter, which was torpedoed by the USS Seahorse submarine. It is now 140 feet deep in the Pacific Ocean.

Those are just the wreck sites. There are other amazing dive sites all over Guam that are filled with colorful corals and marine animals. Some of the dive sites are Family Beach, Outhouse Beach and Finger Reef within Apra Harbor, to mention a few. Meanwhile, Blue Hole and Hap’s Reef dive sites are for expert diving in Guam.

Ypao Beach Park is one of the most happening places in Guam. Also known as Joseph Flores Beach Park, Ypao is located at the southern end of Tumon Bay and is very popular for family picnics, barbecues, swimming and sporting activities, as well as concerts, contests, parties, and community events that are held at the large amphitheater or in one of the covered pavilions. This is clearly the busiest beach in Guam, especially during the weekends.

Guam is a US territory in the Pacific Ocean. It is located east of the Philippines, south of Japan, north of the equator and near the Marianas Trench. Though Guam is the largest island in Micronesia, it is quite tiny for a country, only 210 square miles. Tourists from all over the world come here for its balmy beaches, amazing dive sites, and exciting local culture. Unlike the many popular island-resorts in Asia, Guam beaches are never overcrowded and the shops accept US dollars since it is the country’s local currency. People come here for scuba diving, snorkeling, jet-skiing, kayaking, parasailing, partying, trekking, and golf. There are also community events and fiestas going on almost all year round. Besides all these, the real draw is the island’s perfect weather and the local people’s friendliness and hospitability.

The best that Guam has to offer – sun, fun, and water – is in Ypao Beach Park. The water is perfect for snorkeling. There are shallow and a bit deeper areas to view an array of brilliantly colored reef fishes swimming in and around interesting coral formations. The best spot for snorkeling is marked with a floating red flag. It is hard to miss. Although the waters are usually calm and clear, tourists are warned that the currents can be unfriendly at times, and so it is wise to first check with the lifeguard. Other reasons to be cautious are sea snakes, scorpions and stonefish.

For people who are not into snorkeling, relaxing by the beach while waiting for the sunset is also a great way to spend time in Ypao. Beach bumming in the Pacific as the sun slowly sets in the horizon, there’s just nothing like it.

As night falls, it’s time to party. Nightlife is another reason why people flock to Ypao. The Chamorro people, natives of Guam, are very friendly and love mingling with tourists. They enjoy fiestas and carnivals, having been culturally influenced by the Spanish. In Ypao, tourists are entertained with nightly fiesta-like parties and drinking especially during the weekends. Local bars and strip clubs keep US sailors and visitors awake until the wee hours of the morning.

Yet, sadly, nothing can be perfect, even this amazing beach. The main problem at Ypao Beach Park is the trash. There can be so many littered beer cans and spoils, and hundreds of flies swarming. Some tourists have been turned off by the site of so many pieces of garbage. To them, it is just a show of disrespect to Nature and to other tourists who are trying to enjoy their vacation. Other than that, everything else is simply spectacular.

Yokoi’s Cave in Guam is unlike any tourist destination anywhere in the world. It is just a tiny hole in the ground. It is not even a real cave. What’s amazing about this site, however, is not its appearance, but the extraordinary story behind it.

In 1941, right after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Japanese troops attacked Guam. The tiny island-nation tried to fight back but after two days of strafing, Guam’s governor finally surrendered the US territory. What followed was what Guam locals call the “darkest years of the country’s history”. After three years, American troops returned to reclaim the country and to liberate the rest of Asia Pacific. It was a one-sided fight, and Japanese soldiers found themselves retreating to the lush jungles and outgrowths of Guam. This is where Yokoi’s Cave comes into the picture.

The cave was named after Japanese combat Sergeant Soichi Yokoi, a brave and loyal soldier of the Japanese Empire. He fought valiantly against the Americans and its allies but eventually he and two of his closest comrades had to retreat. They escaped into one of Guam’s southern jungles near the Talofofo Falls. Just ten minutes away from the base of the falls, the three Japanese soldiers dug a simple hole where they crammed inside to hide from the invading Americans. Their plan worked as they remained hidden inside their self-made cave for several years.

The three managed to survive for many years, long before the war was over. Yokoi’s comrades, Jiji and Nakahada, died from food poisoning in 1962, 18 years after the war. It was actually a blessing in disguise for Yokoi because then he had the tiny hole all for himself. He hid himself very well: in fact, he might have even done it too well, because he ended up being in voluntary isolation for 28 long years. Somehow he survived that long in the jungle and for obvious reasons missed any news about the war having ended. Later, though, he claimed to have figured that the war has ended but was too afraid to come out.

In 1972, local Talofofo farmers discovered him while he was fishing for food. His discovery was announced and he became an instant celebrity. Local officers of Guam kept his hand-made tools, implements and worn-out clothes and are now on display at the Guam Museum in Hagatña. Yokoi was sent home to Tokyo and was welcomed as a World War II hero. He later moved back to his home town in Nagoya, got married and raised a family. He died on September 23, 1997.

Today, a replica cave near Talofofo Falls has been constructed to honor this brave soldier’s determination and perseverance. The actual cave that Yokoi and his two comrades built have long collapsed and is now covered with lush outgrowths.

Japan is only 3 hours away by plane, and today, hordes of Japanese tourists regularly visit Guam. They come to enjoy the beaches, warm weather, delicious foods, and relaxing amenities, but they never miss to pay a visit to Yokoi’s Cave. To them, Yokoi was a hero. Beside the replica cave is a shrine and memorials to honor Yokoi and his two fellow soldiers.
