Guam is an island-nation tropical paradise in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. What to wear in Guam should be appropriate to what this island has to offer – fun, sun, and water. People come to this laid-back country primarily for the beaches, dive spots, local culture, perfect weather, and friendly people.
Beaches are definitely the main attractions. One has got to wonder why many Americans travel to other tourist destinations around the world when Guam, a US territory, is right around the corner. The best beaches in the island line up from Tumon Bay to the Cocos Island to the south. Tumon Bay is Guam’s main resort-tourism area, similar to Hawaii’s Waikiki Beach. What to wear in the beaches of Guam is anything that goes with white sand, turquoise water, jet skis, sunbathing, scuba diving and snorkeling.
One of the most popular beach spots is the Governor Joseph F. Flores Beach Park. It has a wide grassy area where families typically spend time picnicking and playing. Admission is free. The only appropriate attire here are laid back clothes, short pants, jeans, cool shirts, and a baseball cap for protection from the tropical sun. No tuxedos or formal dresses here.
Another popular spot is Haputo Beach. Besides the white sand and clear water, people come here for a trek to Tweed’s Cave. The cave was named after George Tweed, a US Navy radioman who hid in these caves from the Japanese in 1941. There is a fee for entering the caves, but it is worth it for the place’s historical significance and natural wonder. What to wear in Haputo Beach are cool clothes and comfortable sneakers for the trek and amateur spelunking.
Meanwhile, surfers come to Guam for the waves in Talofofo Beach Park. This place is very laid back with plenty of picnic areas, barbecue pits, and shower facilities. Ipan Beach, on the other hand, has very calm waves. It is also perfect for picnics and fun time wading in the water with family and friends.
Besides the beaches, tourists come here to dive, snorkel and just marvel at the beauty of the underwater world. The only scuba dive site in Tumon Bay is Gun Beach, which is about 5 minutes away by foot from the nearest hotel. Plunging to as deep as 100 feet, divers get to enjoy swimming through colorful corals and shells, and with a variety of fishes.
There are a number of other dive sites such as Fish Eye, Finger Reef, Gab Gab and Taga-chang Beach Park, just to name a few. And since Guam has tons of military and naval history, a number of dive sites features sunken military ships during World War 2. Some of these sites include Kitsugawa Maru, SMS Cormoran and Tokai Maru.
Finally, even if without considering the amazing hospitality and culture of the locals, people come to Guam for its perfect weather. It is known to maintain a balmy atmosphere throughout the year. Although Guam does have rainy months and occasionally gets hit by typhoon, the country generally experiences warm sunny weather with cool sea breeze whole year round. What to wear in Guam should definitely include cotton shirts, light short pants, flip-fops, wide hats, sunglasses, and everything else that spells perfect weather in tropical paradise.
